Translation: Sanjaya said: O King, after looking over the army gathered by the sons of Pandu, King Duryodhana went to his teacher and began to speak the following words.
Meaning
Sanjaya, the narrator of the Bhagavad Gita, begins by addressing King Dhritarashtra, who is eager to know about the developments on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. Sanjaya describes how Duryodhana, the eldest son of Dhritarashtra and the leader of the Kauravas, observes the military formation of the Pandavas.
Duryodhana’s act of surveying the Pandava army reflects his concern and anxiety about the strength and prowess of his opponents. Despite having a larger army, Duryodhana feels uneasy upon seeing the well-organized and formidable forces of the Pandavas Army.
Duryodhana’s decision to approach his teacher, Dronacharya, for counsel is significant. Dronacharya, a revered and skilled warrior, serves as the commander-in-chief of the Kaurava army. Duryodhana seeks guidance and support from Dronacharya, indicating his reliance on the wisdom and expertise of his teacher.
This verse highlights the theme of duty and righteousness and moral dilemmas faced by individuals in positions of power. Duryodhana’s actions reflect his conflicting emotions of fear, pride, and uncertainty in the face of an impending war. It also sets the stage for the ensuing dialogue between Duryodhana and Dronacharya,
Overall, the Bhagavad Gita verse 2 serves as an introduction to the epic battle of Kurukshetra and the moral, ethical, and philosophical dilemmas faced by its characters, laying the foundation for the profound teachings of Lord Krishna to Arjuna in the subsequent chapters of the Bhagavad Gita.
